Most pour-over “kits” on the internet are Size 02. They brew 1–4 cups. They look like the V60 you see in cafés. They are the wrong tool if you actually drink one mug.

The Hario V60-01 is the small cone. One to two cups. A 12–20 g dose. A coffee bed that is deep enough to extract cleanly instead of sitting in a shallow puddle at the bottom of a bigger dripper. That is the difference between a bright, even cup and a brew you keep chasing with grind changes that never quite land.

This starter kit is the honest version of getting started: the white ceramic V60-01 dripper and two 100-count boxes of genuine Hario 01 white paper filters. Two hundred brews before you think about filters again. No server pretending to be included. No journal. No mug set. The pieces that touch the coffee, in the size that matches a single mug.

Ceramic holds heat better than the plastic 01. Preheat it with your rinse water and the slurry stays stable while you pour. Spiral ridges keep the paper off the wall so water can drain instead of stall. The single large hole puts flow rate in your hand, pour faster for a lighter cup, slower for more body. That control is why the V60 became the default pour-over, not because the cone looks good on a shelf.

If you later want a 360 ml server, a gooseneck, or a scale, we stock the matching 01 pieces next to this kit. Start here if the drink is one cup and you want the brewer sized for that drink.

Features That Deliver

Sized for one mug, not a crowd. Hario rates the 01 at 1–2 cups (about 200–360 ml). A practical home recipe is 15 g coffee to 250 g water. The 02 is the better buy if you regularly split a carafe or brew 500 ml. Buy the 01 when the mug on the counter is the batch size.

Ceramic that holds the rinse. The white V60-01 ceramic dripper soaks up heat from the filter rinse and gives it back to the slurry. Plastic 01 drippers are lighter and cheaper. Ceramic is the one you leave on the counter because it brews sweeter once it is warm.

Spiral ridges and a single large hole. The 60° cone stacks the grounds in a deep bed. Ribs pull the paper off the wall so air and water can move. The open hole does not meter the brew for you, your pour does. Faster circles, lighter cup. Slower pulses, more weight.

200 genuine V60-01 filters in the box. Two packs of official 01 white paper, 100 ct each. An 02 filter will not sit correctly in this dripper. FSC-certified, oxygen-bleached, made without glue. Rinse once, then brew for months before you reorder.

A starter that does not lie about the box. You still need a kettle, a mug or 01-size server, and coffee. A scale makes the second cup match the first. The kit itself is the dripper and the paper. That is what “starter” should mean.

Who It’s For

Buy this if you brew one mug most mornings, want ceramic instead of travel plastic, and would rather learn on a small bed than fight a half-empty 02.

Look elsewhere if you regularly brew 400–600 ml (that is the V60-02), you want server + scoop in one gift box (buy a complete 01 set), or you need something unbreakable for a bag (buy the plastic 01 alone).

V60-01 vs. 02 vs. Wave 155

Same geometry, different job. Brew a 15 g mug in an 02 and the bed is shallow. The 01 keeps that dose in a deeper bed. Filters are not interchangeable.

Plastic 01 wins on price and not chipping. Ceramic 01 wins on thermal mass after the rinse.

Kalita Wave 155 is the other serious one-cup brewer: flatter, more forgiving. Stay on the V60-01 if you want café-style control, and you will learn a spiral pour.

Key takeaway: The 02 kit is the volume play. Plastic 01 is the travel play. The Wave 155 is the forgiving one-cup play. This kit is ceramic V60-01 plus enough official 01 paper to stop thinking about filters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What comes in this starter kit?
The white ceramic V60-01 dripper and two 100-count boxes of official Hario 01 white filters (200 filters). No server, kettle, or scoop.

What’s the difference between V60 01 and 02?
Capacity and bed depth. Same 60° cone. The 01 is one mug (~200–360 ml, 12–20 g). The 02 is 1–4 cups. 01 paper only fits 01 drippers.

Do I need a gooseneck?
If you want the cup the V60 is famous for, yes. The single hole passes whatever pour you give it. A stock kettle works. It will not give you the same control.
