This 14 gram portafilter basket while not an original La Marzocco part, is quite popular amongst those who have realized it's benefits.

This is the infamous double basket without a retaining ridge. So what's the big deal and why is it so popular? Well let's just say that a little mistake was made, and the ridge was not placed in the basket. Turns out that this was one of those advantageous mistakes that has been beneficial to those who enjoy the perfect espresso. The lack of a retaining ridge allows the use of a 58mm hand tamp and the the pattern and hole aperture of the basket proves to be beneficial to espresso preparation. Perfect for prosumer machines like the Rancilio Silvia and others. We requested another round of mistakes and here they are!

Works great on my Faema Compact. Easily hold the 18 grams I normalle dose. The lack of ridge is very convenient.

The slightly larger volume allowed me to really dial in my extractions. I had to grind too fine with the smaller basket, and grounds would come through. Tamp too hard and I got channeling. Having the extra volume allowed me to back off on the grind, tamp a bit lighter and get a great 28-30 second extraction with no grounds coming through. (machine: La Valentina E61 HX)

An excellent basket for double shots on any machine with a 58mm portafilter. I like the fact that it doesn't have a ridge, so you can pop the basket out even if there's a spring in the portafilter. Plus, it can hold a lot of coffee, up to 20 grams if you want.

This basket seems to work the best on my E61 machine, even better than the standard La Marzocco ridged basket. It works fine for 14 to 17 gram doses (haven't tried higher or lower) and, because it's straight walled, my 58mm tamper works just fine. The shape permits the thinnest puck of any baskets I have. This is the one I use every day.
